Young Victor Carl is a fool for love and money, but he's not a blind fool. When Victor is propositioned by the woman of his dreams, he knows it's too good to be true. She offers him the perfect job, a prosperous future, and, best of all, when her tongue is in his mouth, she tastes like strawberries. But it isn't long before Victor realizes that to keep these prizes, he must keep his client - currently in the clink for murder - from spilling the truth about what really happened the night of the killing.

Is Victor ready to be bought? Hell yes. But not until he learns the truth. Someone is being protected, and Victor intends to find out who's worth all the fuss. Because Victor Carl is willing to sell his soul, sure, especially for a bite of strawberry, but only if the price is right.

A Bite of Strawberry (Audible Audio Edition) William Lashner Luke Daniels Brilliance Audio Books

Lashner Fans get an insight into Victor Carl's teen years in this short story. I was amazed at how similar it was to mine, even to the extent of the fight over the girl friend. The only difference was my step-father never came to my rescue.

Victor joined the "Sell your soul" club about the same age as all of us "fools for love" but he didn't quite stay in the ring long enough for the full fleecing and beating that most of us get. The "girl of your dreams" can become your worst nightmare and that strawberry taste can turn into a raspberry when your summons arrives. Community property becomes Community Poverty for him while all the property goes to Dream Girl.

Lashner's plot is simple. Victor wants to mitigate his clients potential life sentence for felony murder because his only part in the crime was driver of the get away car. The problem is his client refuses to reveal the shooter.

Victor meets a beautiful woman in his usual hangout bar. She. turns out to be a lawyer in a prestigious firm. Her goal is to hook Victor an make sure he convinces his client not to accept a plea from the DA and to not reveal his partner in the crime. After some tantalizing encounters Victor begins to realize he is being played and the firm is trying to protect one of their clients who has an interest in Victor's case.

Will Victor succumb to the "girl of his dreams" the girl with kisses that taste like strawberries? Or will he follow up on every lead he has to find the shooter so that his client can get a reduced sentence and his child can get a life saving operation?

This is a very well written short story. Don't miss it.

A Bite of Strawberry (Audible Audio Edition) William Lashner Luke Daniels Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Short and "sweet." Lashner's Victor Carl is a complicated protagonist, sort of a legal Sam Spade a much better man than he believes himself to be, always disappointed by his failure to sell himself out for riches, sex, and a position in a good law firm, in preference for "doing the right thing." This is a great "read," albeit short, and the Audible version was well narrated.
The story describes the early days of young Victor Carl, the ethically challenged attorney of the novel Bitter Truth. It as expected it is well written and expertly plotted . Good character development for a Short Story . While not profound, it is a good story with some surprises I enjoyed reading it
I read all of William Lashner's books and although sometime they are predictable he always adds a little twist. He is one of my favorite writers. I generally read books writen by lawyers because not only are they easy reads, they also add a little lawyer education to the plot.
A "Bite of Strawberry" was a quick, easy, enjoyable read. I have read all of the "Victor Carl" books and haven't really been disappointed in any of them. I enjoy the character a lot.

Since this was the first "book" I read on my , I liked the fact it was a "short story." I figured a short story it would be a good way to decide if I liked reading on a electronic device.

I enjoyed the experience so much, that after I finished, I promptly "borrowed" a book from the library. I will probably read "real" books in the future, but reading on a is great. I like the bookmark feature, the "instant dictionary" feature and the ability to read the same book on other devices (my phone) without losing your place.

If you are looking for a quick "beach read" type of experience and/or like the other Victor Carl books, you will enjoy this.
This short story is a must read for any Victor Carl fan. Lashner tells us the background story of Victor's mindset regarding the rich and powerful. And while Victor may be ethically challenged from time to time, he is at his core a lawyer and a professionalone who puts his clients needs ahead of his own. Looking forward to the next novel. Well done.
Short and a bit too predictable. Serves mostly as a vehicle for the main character, Victor Carl, to wisecrack and ruminate about his childhood. Lasher's other Victor Carl stories have more substance, conflict and the supporting characters are not merely stereotype.
Bill latest story returns us to before Hostile Witness. Victor is amazing once more and we get more background on his childhood/development in this entry. Victor is not aided by the subtle and unforgettable sidekicks Bill is notorious for but, Victor once again is caught between whats right and whats best for him. A tasty appetizer but not the full course I've been longing for.

I did my best to draw this novella out as long as I could since Victor will not return until next August. In the meantime, I look forward to the Barkeep in February and am thrilled to see Bill knocking them out of the park once more. too many years without my favorite author.
